A Former Rockette Receives a Day of Beauty with Alayne

Recently I have had an opportunity to become acquainted with an amazing woman.  The problem is… looking at Miss Janet Murphy, you don’t really know how amazing she is!. Well, that all changed on Martin Luther King Day 2014.   You see, Janet is an extremely selfless hard working woman, and saw a recent photo of herself and realized she didn’t recognize the woman she saw.  She felt a bit pale and well… tired… and why wouldn’t she be.  Here’s why!

2014-01-20 18.31.19

Janet Before

Janet became a Rockette performing at Radio City Music Hall in New York City at the age of 20.  She  was chosen as a Rockette the very first time she tried out , which she later found out rarely happens. Janet is still involved in the Rockette Alumni Association and often travels to NYC to meet with her former dance members.  When she was a teen she rarely attended school functions or dances because she was always practicing.  She said she would often do 1000 kicks per day!

After Janet finished performing  with the Rockettes she went south and performed at Walt Disney World.   Janet was an only child, born in Utica New York, and was very close to her mother.  Janet’s mom would take her to see the Rockettes perform in NYC. They also attended the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City each year.  About 15 years ago, Janet’s mother took on the task of being the local executive director to the Miss America Preliminary Scholarship Competition.  Janet’s mother  was struck with cancer the year that her first local competition was to take place.  Janet took on ALL the duties that would have been her mother’s.  Although, Janet’s mother attended the pageant she died just a few weeks later.  Today, Janet, who never had any children of her own, carries on her mother’s dream and oversees 3 Miss and 3 Outstanding Teen competitors who go on to compete in the Miss New York America Competition and Miss New York Outstanding Teen Competition hoping to win scholarship money to attend college or fulfill their own dreams.  Some of her girls have even won full college scholarships all together.

We talked a lot that Martin Luther King day about all the girls she has met and helped and still maintains relationships with to this day. She could recall their talents, the years they competed, the dresses they wore and all their now children’s names!!!  She told me about driving, sometimes alone, to Florida year after year to show support to her “teen girls” competing there.  And how happy she was that the Miss America Pageant was back in Atlantic City where she and her mother attended 17 years in a row!

Janet Before

Janet also teaches 28 dance classes per week, from toddlers to senior citizens all around the capital district.  Her seniors have been asked to perform all over the east coast!  And as if that wasn’t enough, she is also an assistant manager at Christopher and Banks retail women’s specialty store in Colonie Center. Why does Janet do all this.  To keep her mother’s dream and the dream of young girls alive!

So now you know why Janet was looking a bit pale and tired in the photo.  What I didn’t tell you was that the photo was taken because Janet found out that she had been awarded an honor from her job at Christopher and Banks for her commitment to the company, her customer service and her outstanding productivity in the entire northeast region, and her picture would be appearing on the company website! So when a mutual friend of ours heard that Janet somehow had a day off on that chilly Monday, she asked me to squeeze her in for a day of beauty.  I couldn’t say no!

Miss Janet (in green) and I having fun with a few local titleholders.

Janet’s next annual competition will be held on March 1st, at the Edison Club, in Clifton Park.  She plans on having 15-20 girls from all over the state competing for 3 titles to attend the Miss New York America competition in May.  Check out Janet’s facebook page

or email her at

feel free to message her with any entry inquiries, donations or questions.  If she doesn’t get back to you right away I’m sure you’ll understand why and plan on seeing a new Janet there that day!

We colored Janet’s grey with Schwarzkopf Absolutes, Not too far from her own color so upkeep would be minimal and shine would return to her neglected locks. We left her hair long enough so she can still pull it back for dance classes. She dislikes when her bangs cover her eyes, so we trimmed them slightly.

Our inspiration for her makeup was from a Rockette photo she showed me from almost 3o years ago. Janet even knows how to put on her own false lashes with ease, when she has time!! I showed her how to put her hair into a quick, yet elegant French twist for the upcoming pageant!

Thank you for spending your only day off with me Janet! The pleasure was all mine!!

2013 Was a Fabulous Year!

Wow–I can’t believe it’s January (nearly February) already! 2013 flew by and was a really amazing year for us here at Make Me Fabulous. I wanted to share some of our biggest and most fabulous moments from the past twelve months! Take a look below and see what we were up to last year…

This brides dress was so spectacular it took her entire bridal party a full hour to get her completely in it!  We always wait till the bride is in her dress to see the final product and put in her veil!  Sometimes this means we have to do a lot of waiting around, but really we were busy doing lots of fabulous fun stuff too!

Starting off in February, Make Me Fabulous was invited to participate in the Electric City Couture fashion show; we worked with Changes Salon and April and Company and this turned into a year long collaboration!

In March, Make Me Fabulous was featured in Martha Stewart Weddings for Biz and Micah’s Saratoga wedding!

In April, we were featured in InStyle Hair Magazine for one of the MOST pinned images on Pinterest! The photo below is by Seth Guistimbelli.  What is even more amazing is that we didn’t even have a Pinterest page (now we do–see all the fabulousness here) when we received the notice! The original pin actually came from our friend and former bride Samantha at The Elegant Owl.

Make Me Fabulous owner, Alayne Curtiss, was featured in the book Twenty Something Girl, co-authored by former MMF bride, Melissa Fiorenza! Alayne is quoted on page 5, two pages after Gwyneth Paltrow, “I’m totally OK with that!”Alayne says.

In the late spring, Make Me Fabulous collaborated with JP Elario for a promotional shoot for Angela’s Bridal in downtown Albany–we worked on 11 brides! OK, so you can’t tell from this photo, but it was pouring rain all over our 11 beauties and their dresses after the staff at Angela’s Bridal and Team Fabulous spent 5 hours creating bridal perfection. We were running in between takes covering the “brides” with tarps, umbrellas, and coats!

Make Me Fabulous was featured in both Style Me Pretty and on the Carats and Cake blog for Mary and Drew’s Lake Placid Wedding with Tracey Buyce Photography! Major props go to David Michael Schmidt of Renaissance Floral Design and Christine Wheat of Christine Wheat Events who worked for days and left no detail untouched to turn this remote Adirondack location into a wedding paradise.

We were so honored to be part of Namita and Dom’s Franklin Plaza wedding this past July after the couple survived a near death accident in Germany. How gorgeous was Namita?! Their wedding was also featured recently in HerLife Magazine! Indian weddings are filled with so much tradition and detail; our  team was in and out for Namita and Dom’s wedding for 12 hours! Photography by Niki Rossi Photography.

Make Me Fabulous welcomed several new products lines including bliss, philosophy, and stila!  This now makes us the carrier of 5 of the top selling cosmetics brands in the nation!

In the fall, we were honored to be asked (again,) to collaborate with JP Elario of Elario Photography and Angela’s Bridal for another promotional photo shoot for the new Mazzone event space at 90 State St. in downtown Albany! Alayne found her inspiration for the styling for this shoot after watching an ad that appeared on You Tube one day while she was cooking and listening to Carrie Underwood. Plus, JP loves when brides wear their hair down! Check out our sweet assistant Rebecca in the back who we coerced to fill in for a sick model. She was heard jokingly saying, “You can get our own coffee today!”

In late November, we helped Kelly and Craig celebrate their wedding…just after Craig celebrated winning the World Series with the Boston Red Sox. Our team raved that Kelly was one of the sweetest brides they have ever worked with! Photos by Servidone Studios and a special thank you to Katie O’Malley of Katie O’ Events or insisting that we find room for her beautiful couple!

And, a surprise bonus, one of our couples (#13) was included in the Huffington Post’s top 25 photos of the year! Congrats to Kate and Kyle!

Wow–what a year! So much has happened and I’m so thankful to the amazing #teamfab and our fabulous clients! We hope you enjoyed our look back on 2013 and we’re so excited to see what the rest of 2014 brings!

A Fabulous Saratoga Wedding…

Happy New Year! I want to share with you the fabulousness that was Kelly and Craig’s Saratoga wedding!

This was a unique wedding for us as, though it didn’t seem like it from the get go. Like most brides, Kelly came to Ballston Spa for her preview about a month prior the her wedding with her mom and sister-in-law to be. She and her fiance were just a little busy, though. Her soon-to-be husband, Craig, is a south paw pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. So the months prior to their November wedding were pretty hectic with baseball season and then the Red Sox winning the World Series…yeah, no big deal, right?!

During the trial, Senior MMF makeup artist, Suzan, said Kelly wanted a smoky eye and a natural lip, and she loved the look.  I used our new Stila In the Know Artist Eyeshadow Palette, and Bare Minerals Rule Breaker Moxie Lip Gloss. But on the wedding day Kelly threw us a curve ball (hah!) and decided to have a more natural look. I used the same palette and just toned the application down a bit. Kelly was one of the sweetest brides I have ever worked with and is stunning to boot! She definitely made my job easy!
For Kelly’s hairstyle, senior stylist, Angela, noted that Kelly wanted a soft and natural look, again. We decided that big, soft, flowing curls would be so gorgeous with the sheer top of her wedding dress. We constructed a very simple down-do with loose waves by using my favorite combo of Schwarzkopf Osis styling products including, Flatliner for thermal protection and control against humidity and Freeze pump hairspray for hold. We used a 1 and 1/4 inch curling iron and let the curls cool while her makeup was being done. Kelly was very elegant and radiated a subtle, timeless glamour. With her kind and gentle demeanor I wouldn’t have guessed she was marrying a world series ball player!  Kelly actually hired Suzan and Angela to stay on and to touch her makeup and hair after the ceremony (just incase she needed it). After the ceremony, we just gave her a few quick tossles, spritzes, and a lipgloss touchup and sent her on her way to enjoy the rest of the evening.
We were really honored to be part of such an amazing day! Congratulations again to Kelly and Craig and thanks for choosing Make Me Fabulous!

Stay fabulous–
