The Making of a Photoshoot – with Guest Blogger Nina Jade

Hello everyone!

Nina Jade  here, the face of Make Me Fab.  I am very excited to be blogging this month. After years of working with Alayne, I have to say I am honored to be the spokesmodel to such an amazing company!  Today, I’ll be chatting with you about my latest photoshoot for Alayne and MMF.  Giving you a little insight on what its like to organize, plan, prep, and do a photoshoot with the dream team!

A month or so before the shoot I reached out to Alayne and JP Elario of Elario Photography Inc, for our annual photoshoot. If you remember last year we shot around the same time on location in a bed and breakfast in downtown Albany, NY and got some pretty amazing stuff. We hadn’t shot together as a team since then so it was time to reconnect. Our last photoshoot’s focus was simple and sorta sexy. This time around we wanted to focus on black and white photography and simple styling with a modern twist. I wanted to incorporate different hairstyles that I haven’t done yet. I have had my hair curled, teased, braided, blown out, you name it, but you would be surprised that I actually haven’t shot with simple upstyles yet!

(From our previous shoot last year)

Planning a shoot is always exciting, you come together to plan and organize everyone’s opinions. From there, you make a mood board that we can use on the day of the shoot. So everything runs smoothly. We all messaged images we liked and had collected from tumblr, pinterest, magazines, etc. I can get a feel on what the mood will be for the shoot and what direction I will be leaning toward with my poses and expressions. I usually go out and do a mini shopping haul too, to get items we may need if the photoshoot requires certain outfits or pieces. This time around I was lucky (or lazy) as I didn’t have to. The wardrobe didn’t have to be over the top because the main focus was mostly beauty and profile shots of ME – ( No pressure here!)

A day before the shoot I made my once every few months visit to Alayne for a hair trim,  have her fix my eye brows, and pick out a few of my favorite makeup products. We also picked out what would be great to use on set. This time we toyed with the idea of using hair extensions, which I’m happy we did!  I never use extensions since my hair is rather long but for photoshoots it adds such great volume you can’t pass up!

I have been traveling and working abroad this past year and really haven’t been in the area for more than a few days, so when I came home this time it was really a treat, I needed a lot of work! We didn’t do anything major to my hair, since we both love the length!  To be fair, if you ask Alayne, I am probably one of the biggest babies when it comes to my hair. I dream of cut and coloring and doing amazing things with it,  but as soon as I sit in that chair it all goes out the window. This time, after the blow out with Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray we set my hair and curled it. All the traveling was really taking its toll on me and I was definitely feeling the jet lag.  Alayne sent me home to get some beauty rest!!!!  (Yes, some days I do refer to her as MOMager.)

Pre Game Prep!

In the morning, I was back at MMF by 8:00 am and still had volume and body in my hair.  It was just Alayne and I at the salon and since we did a little prep work the day before we just had to add some extensions. Alayne recurled my hair with a 1 and 1/4 size regular iron in wrap curls, spraying everything in place with soft hair spray, Bumble and Bumble Spray de Mode and texturized with Dry Spun Finish Spray, and then we were on to make up!

We kept the make up simple at first, since that’s always the key rule for photoshoots. Clean and simple and then work your way up. Alayne used Illuminaire on me which I love. We usually use this for photoshoots because it has more coverage and it stays on thru out the shoot and doesn’t melt off mid-way.  Then on my days off from shooting I use Bare Minerals which is lighter.   I love them both because they don’t make me breakout after a long day of shooting like some other products do.  My skin is really sensitive! Alayne and I  have worked hard to find products that don’t wreak havoc with my skin.  Many people also commented on how they liked the contouring we used on this shoot.  Alayne used the Kevyn Aucoin Sculpting Powder in Medium, and of course everything is available at Make Me Fabulous.

(selfie before first look, a must of course!)

Once we arrived at The Elario Studio, of course Lexi, Big Joe and the editing assistants, Jenny and Jaime were all there to greet us!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

I pulled out everything in my suitcase and we decided to go with the flow and see what happened, and let me say it turned out amazing! Everything just worked, the hair was soft and flowing and the makeup was on point. JP always puts on music  that I like and we all really work well together.  JP began to shoot and we just rolled with it and let the shoot take on it’s own personality and the vision that we had been messaging about for a month!  This is how we roll and we are always happy with the result.

secondlookAfter a few looks with the hair down and playing with the fan (one of Alayne’s favorite props on a shoot) we started playing with ideas with the hair for our next looks. I wanted to do something big, yet simple, so we came up with something like this

Channeling my inner Audrey

Simple yet beautiful, love the texture happening here in my layers.hair2

Its always a good time shooting with the dream team! I walk away feeling like I created strong images that I’ll be able to use in my portfolio for years to come. Below is a dream team photo taken with Big Joe’ s vintage polaroid camera!  I love when he pulls out the old, yet classic cameras! Well, I do love being infront of any camera now that you mention it.  Tee Hee!

I hope you guys enjoyed this post and got an idea what its like to be a part of a day with Nina! It’s a lot of prep work but once on set it all pays off. If you’d like to follow more of my work be sure to catch me on the links below!

Stay fabulous everyone!

Photo Shoot Fun!

About a year ago we were approached by one of our favorite photographers, JP Elario about teaming up with Angela’s Bridal and a group of fabulous models for a bridal photo shoot. The results were amazing and it turned into a quarterly event.

photo shoot all

This quarter was the biggest shoot to date with 14 models to style but we were up for the task! We were looking to achieve a more realistic feel. Something a bride would actually wear on her wedding day. So updos were on the menu.  The entire Make Me Fabulous team arrived at Angela’s Bridal hours before to start prepping the models the same way we would for a real wedding. What really sets us apart is our amazing knowledge of our products. We know what works, what holds and what different hair types require.  Our favorite products for prepping the hair are bumble and bumble holding spray, bumble and bumble does it all spray adding a little bumble and bumble grooming cream for hydration. The hair turns out full and soft while maintaining the curl we need to achieve each style. To add volume at the root nothing compares to OSIS+ Glamour Queen. This is one of the newest products from Schwarzkopf and we’re in LOVE with it. You won’t believe how high you can get the hair after using it! Finish the entire look with the OSIS+ Session Label Strong Hold hairspray and the girls were everything proof.

Now onto their absolutely flawless makeup! We use only the best professional lines available. Each face is primed. One of our favorite primers is Stila All Day Prime & Anti-Shine Balm. This multi-tasking, secret weapon provides invisible coverage for a flawless complexion. Use under makeup as a primer to create an impeccable canvas for flawless makeup application, use over makeup to set and extend wear, or use in place of a pressed powder for touchups throughout the day. Foundation is also key for a flawless look. A lot of our makeup artists like the Stila Stay All Day Foundation. It even comes with matching concealer and an application brush! Lips tie it all together. We love the bareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lipsticks. These creamy, super-saturated, ultra-pigmented color glide on like butter for full coverage in a rich satin finish. We finish e ach face with a finishing powder like the bareMinerals Mineral Veil to give each face a perfect airbrushed look.

These photo shoots give us a much needed creative outlet and we love every single second of it. Two of our stylists were even chosen to model! Fun!! Here is a link to the entire blog post by JP

2013 Was a Fabulous Year!

Wow–I can’t believe it’s January (nearly February) already! 2013 flew by and was a really amazing year for us here at Make Me Fabulous. I wanted to share some of our biggest and most fabulous moments from the past twelve months! Take a look below and see what we were up to last year…

This brides dress was so spectacular it took her entire bridal party a full hour to get her completely in it!  We always wait till the bride is in her dress to see the final product and put in her veil!  Sometimes this means we have to do a lot of waiting around, but really we were busy doing lots of fabulous fun stuff too!

Starting off in February, Make Me Fabulous was invited to participate in the Electric City Couture fashion show; we worked with Changes Salon and April and Company and this turned into a year long collaboration!

In March, Make Me Fabulous was featured in Martha Stewart Weddings for Biz and Micah’s Saratoga wedding!

In April, we were featured in InStyle Hair Magazine for one of the MOST pinned images on Pinterest! The photo below is by Seth Guistimbelli.  What is even more amazing is that we didn’t even have a Pinterest page (now we do–see all the fabulousness here) when we received the notice! The original pin actually came from our friend and former bride Samantha at The Elegant Owl.

Make Me Fabulous owner, Alayne Curtiss, was featured in the book Twenty Something Girl, co-authored by former MMF bride, Melissa Fiorenza! Alayne is quoted on page 5, two pages after Gwyneth Paltrow, “I’m totally OK with that!”Alayne says.

In the late spring, Make Me Fabulous collaborated with JP Elario for a promotional shoot for Angela’s Bridal in downtown Albany–we worked on 11 brides! OK, so you can’t tell from this photo, but it was pouring rain all over our 11 beauties and their dresses after the staff at Angela’s Bridal and Team Fabulous spent 5 hours creating bridal perfection. We were running in between takes covering the “brides” with tarps, umbrellas, and coats!

Make Me Fabulous was featured in both Style Me Pretty and on the Carats and Cake blog for Mary and Drew’s Lake Placid Wedding with Tracey Buyce Photography! Major props go to David Michael Schmidt of Renaissance Floral Design and Christine Wheat of Christine Wheat Events who worked for days and left no detail untouched to turn this remote Adirondack location into a wedding paradise.

We were so honored to be part of Namita and Dom’s Franklin Plaza wedding this past July after the couple survived a near death accident in Germany. How gorgeous was Namita?! Their wedding was also featured recently in HerLife Magazine! Indian weddings are filled with so much tradition and detail; our  team was in and out for Namita and Dom’s wedding for 12 hours! Photography by Niki Rossi Photography.

Make Me Fabulous welcomed several new products lines including bliss, philosophy, and stila!  This now makes us the carrier of 5 of the top selling cosmetics brands in the nation!

In the fall, we were honored to be asked (again,) to collaborate with JP Elario of Elario Photography and Angela’s Bridal for another promotional photo shoot for the new Mazzone event space at 90 State St. in downtown Albany! Alayne found her inspiration for the styling for this shoot after watching an ad that appeared on You Tube one day while she was cooking and listening to Carrie Underwood. Plus, JP loves when brides wear their hair down! Check out our sweet assistant Rebecca in the back who we coerced to fill in for a sick model. She was heard jokingly saying, “You can get our own coffee today!”

In late November, we helped Kelly and Craig celebrate their wedding…just after Craig celebrated winning the World Series with the Boston Red Sox. Our team raved that Kelly was one of the sweetest brides they have ever worked with! Photos by Servidone Studios and a special thank you to Katie O’Malley of Katie O’ Events or insisting that we find room for her beautiful couple!

And, a surprise bonus, one of our couples (#13) was included in the Huffington Post’s top 25 photos of the year! Congrats to Kate and Kyle!

Wow–what a year! So much has happened and I’m so thankful to the amazing #teamfab and our fabulous clients! We hope you enjoyed our look back on 2013 and we’re so excited to see what the rest of 2014 brings!

Introducing…Stila at Make Me Fabulous!

Happy Friday, Friends! Today we’re OFFICIALLY welcoming stila cosmetics to Make Me Fabulous! We’re so excited to offer this fabulous line of cosmetics in our shop! Let me tell you a bit about why stila is so fabulous…

A lot of time, energy, and thought goes into what products we use and sell here at MMF. I always want to make sure the products we carry are the best and bring something different to our shop for our clients and customers. We also look for products that meet our strict standards; we want clean, yet wearable cosmetics that contain skin soothing minerals. Stila is free of parabens, oil, and fragrances–fabulous, right?

Stila also appealed because it’s widely used in commercial and television formats. In fact, the stila “stay all day” foundation and cream cheek color are used on the FX hit American Horror Story and stila is the makeup of choice for the cast of Dancing With the Stars for its wearability and staying power. This is important for us here at Make Me Fabulous because we do so much commercial work as well.

In fact, Make Me Fabulous trains and provides the cosmetics for the news anchors and reporters at WNYT, News Channel 13. Stila cosmetics are high definition camera friendly products–this was a major factor in bringing on the line for us because we know stila will offer the coverage our clients require, both on and off camera!

Makeup that has staying power for our bridal clients is obviously a must, too. A wedding day is a marathon and we make sure our brides look fabulous all day!

I was also really drawn to stila because of their vast color offerings. Stila’s colors are so diverse. Check out the images below to see how unique their colors are; we think they’re fabulous!

The “kitten” eye shadow (pictured below) is notoriously popular as is the “stay all day” black waterproof liquid eyeliner. Both of these products have an almost cult like following! The stila “perfect and correct foundation” contains “Youth Revival Bio-Available Mineral Complex” which is comprised of 15 bio-available minerals that go through a process using spring water to extract and suspend the ionically charged minerals, which makes this foundation easily absorbed by the skin.

To celebrate both the launch of stila at Make Me Fabulous and the upcoming holiday season, we’re pleased to offer a free foundation brush with a stila purchase on December 6th’s First Friday event here in Ballston Spa!

We’ll also be stocking up on several color palette sets for the holiday season! These will range in price from $20-$39 and we’ll even have the Artist’s Signature Set that contains 15 lip glosses; 12 eye shadows; 4 blushes; 7 eye liners; 4 smudge pots; and 3 brushes for $185! For those looking to update their eye liners, the stila eye liner set (pictured below) contains 5 eye liners for $39 (they’re regularly $20 a piece–what a deal)!

We’re so excited to be an official stila retailer! We hope you stop by the shop and check out this fabulous product line–remember, we’re giving away a free foundation brush with any stila purchase on December 6th for First Friday!

Have you tried stila products before? If so, what are your favorites? Let me know in the comments!

Stay fabulous–

The Making of a Fabulous Image with JP Elario & Angela’s Bridal!

You may have heard that Angela’s Bridal is now open in downtown Albany…they recently made the big move from Guilderland to downtown Albany and had a FABULOUS grand opening celebration! Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend the grand opening (we had a very special birthday to celebrate in our family–my eldest daughter’s 18th!), but I was so happy to be part of the opening…behind the scenes!

A few weeks before the grand opening JP Elario of Elario Photography and Janet Cooper, owner of Angela’s Bridal, asked Make Me Fabulous to help out with their collaboration to do some promotional photos. They enlisted our help to be on set for hair and makeup for the photo shoot and, of course, I said YES! How fabulous!

We ended up meeting on a Monday afternoon a few weeks ago for the photo shoot–it  was the best day for JP and Janet and our “brides.” So we assembled at the new (and oh, so fabulous) Angela’s Bridal store on State Street (just down from the Capitol) and started bringing the fabulous for ELEVEN models! Whoa! It was a lot of work–but so fun! Creating bridal looks on eleven ladies made me thankful that we typically just work on one bride at a time!

A Behind the Scenes shot by Amy!

A Behind the Scenes shot by Amy!

The Monday that worked for all of us arrived and, guess what? It was raining! We knew we couldn’t reschedule the nearly 30 people it took to bring this shoot to life, so we had to start prepping and hope for the best! Eight members of our Make Me Fabulous team spent five hours creating an “editorial look” for each and every model. We then we looked over each and every model to make sure she was perfect!  JP loves it when brides wear their hair down, so in true Elario favor, I decided that the models’ hair would be down. I tried to capture the 1940’s vintage style that is sooo popular today and pair it with striking red lips.  I knew the shot would be big so the hair needed to be big and the colors bold, so each girl stood out amongst the group. JP, Janet and I had sent inspirational photos of our and ideas back and forth for weeks.

JP took a ton of photos inside the beautiful space that is Angela’s Bridal (we sprayed and shellacked and sprayed the models again)! And the staff at Angela’s just kept prepping dresses! We were all holding our breath and standing at the door with umbrella’s, tarps and plastic bags waiting for the rain to stop. And then JP said, “OK–let’s take this party outside, ladies!” We all looked at each other in fear, took a deep breath, opened the front door, and started walking up State Street!

At this point, I kind of freaked out–I mean, it was pouring rain, we had just spent more than 5 hours creating the most perfect hair and makeup we had ever done and JP wanted to take eleven models in bridal gowns and full hair and makeup outside!?! I almost had a heart attack!

JP insisted that I trust him and his vision and I’m so glad I did! The end result was so FABULOUSLY AWESOME and I’m in love with the image below! And, as you can see, it doesn’t even look like it was raining buckets! How does he do that?!

We’re so very happy for Angela’s Bridal and their amazing new store in historic downtown Albany! Congratulations to Janet Cooper and her incredible staff and thanks for inviting Make Me Fabulous to be part of the fun! Will you be stopping by their new store? Let me know in the comments!

Stay fabulous–

Ghosts, Kyle and Clarissa

Well most of you know that I can do Beauty and Commercial stuff .   But recently I was asked to finish up some final scenes for a series that is in discussion to be picked up by BRAVO and The Travel Channel called “On the Lake.”  The series pilot was filmed all around Lake George and in these final scenes the producers needed more Ghosts.  Yes Lake George has lots of them. Did I mention that our host Kristina Krawchuk is well.. Fabulous.  She is so full of energy and super fun.  Not to mention a real professional.

Here is the beautiful trailer and some photos:

The women who played this revolutionary ghost, Mrs. Oberting, is  stunningly beautiful.  You would never know from these photos.

Also, have been working really closely with Kyle on how to change her edgy MAC style into the softer sophisticated MMF style.  We both learned that they are definitely two different animals.  So Kyle has been testing alot.  Here with photographer Eric Truax, and model Bree,  I think she displays that she can definitely transition from one to the other seemlessly.

And Finally, A very special bride marries into a very special family.  Many of you may remember a very special Mona Ghazi Dudek from Last November, She is Joe Elario Phoptography’s biggest Blog Fan and we had the pleasure of getting to know her family.   Well when brother Neema announced he was getting married they called on the Elarios and MMF to work our magic again!

Mona From November 2009

Well, might I add that new sister-in-law Clarissa is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside and we were delighted to get to reunite with them all again in celebrating the addition of Clarissa to the family.

Senior Makeup Artist Suzan and New MMF Stylist Angela were there at the Hotel to get the bride, her mom and Neema’s mom ready while Mona and Gita got ready at the shop.

Next week is another busy commercial week.  We are shooting another Mooradians Commercial, Some fashion still’s for retailer Fancy Schmancy and a Fashion Show in conjunction with Frank Adams Jewelers, David Yurman Jewelry and the Saratoga Golf and Polo Club.
