Self-Tanning Must Haves!

Have you been dying to get a sunkissed glow to start off your summer but there just aren’t enough hours in the day? Look no further, #teamfab has discovered exactly what you need!

The new St. Tropez collection has just arrived and the girls and I at Make Me Fabulous decided to share with you which two self-tanning products we just cannot live without!

First up is St. Tropez Gradual Tan in Shower Lotion:

With just 3 minutes as part of your daily shower routine, Gradual Tan In Shower Lotion is a convenient way to build a sunkissed, gradual glow, that provides up to 24 hour moisturization. This product is streak-free and easy to apply, it’s ideal for first time tanners, pre and post vacation top-ups, or those looking for a low maintenance year-round glow! With Sweet Almond Oil it’s also clinically proven to hydrate the skin for up to 24 hours, so there’s no need to moisturize afterwards, making it perfect for busy lifestyles.

This Gradual Tan In Shower Lotion is also available in Golden Glow Medium for a deeper sunkissed glow in just 3 minutes!

So, why is this product fabulous?

By just simply applying daily in the shower, you can build your desired depth of tan and keep your skin healthy and moisturized!

Second up is St. Tropez One Night Only Temporary Tanner:

IMG_0940Get the signature St.Tropez tan in a flash with One Night Only Wash Off Face & Body Lotion. This innovative and easy-to-use tanning essential delivers a natural-looking, streak-free golden tan that lasts for
up to 24 hours—or until you decide to wash it off. Containing RAINMAC technology with silicon coated pigments, it ensures color will not streak or run even when wet. The advanced formula does not transfer onto clothes or sheets, but can be easily removed with just soap and water. Skin is left smooth, hydrated, and perfectly luminous.

A choice of two shades ensures a perfect finish to suit all skintones: light/medium for St. Tropez classic golden glow or medium/dark for the ultimate deep bronze.

So, why is this product fabulous?

The sunkissed glow this product creates only lasts up to 24 hours so if committing to a bronze for a few weeks isn’t for you, this product is perfect!

We love these products and we hope you do too!

Curly Hair Help Behind the Scenes

NINA_MMF_SB_0006 resized

#teamfab just adores our photo shoots. Bridal and commercial, you name it— we handle all of it.

Typically, we work our magic based on the direction of our clients. They hire us to create a look to fit their mold. Recently, however, we had the opportunity to design our very own vision and watch it come to life in front of the camera. Today we’d love to take you behind the scenes of that shoot, which we believe portrays the Make Me Fabulous image, style, and feel.

We arranged this photo session for two reasons. First, as many of you may be aware, Alayne and Angela W recently worked the hair and makeup for Kleinfeld’s 2016 Bridal Show in NYC.  We sent some of these photos down before we arrived as a portfolio review to get the gig of sorts.

Also, Alayne and Angela W just earned a specialized certification with Ouidad for cutting curly hair.  We created these images to use in our promotional pieces.

Make Me Fabulous has a reputation for following trends to some extent while remaining timeless and classic and beautiful. Our brides are not “overdone.” Perhaps that is why Make Me Fabulous is so successful and why we have maintained a full calendar, year after year. This photo shoot gave Alayne full creative license and the opportunity to showcase all of what Make Me Fabulous is about, which is also exactly what most brides look for— soft, pretty, dreamy.

For the location Alayne chose Something Bleu, a bridal salon in Saratoga, because she adores the feel of the old wood and elaborate woodwork, the history of the building and the gorgeous dresses floating on hangers in the background.

She chose Tiffany Wayne to be the photographer because of her editorial, dreamy style and because she just “totally got,” Alayne’s vision.  See more of our photoshoot on Tiffany’s blog.

Of course, no shoot with Make Me Fabulous would be complete without Nina, who is the face of Make Me Fabulous and quite simply stunning.

Let’s step behind the scenes of this gorgeous image and peek just a bit at the surprisingly involved process of making a bride soft, pretty and dreamy.  Take a look at Nina’s luscious mane of fabulous curls. Though Nina’s hair is naturally long and thick, the fullness you see here is achieved with TWO sets of curled hair extensions. The two different shades give it that natural look.

Curls need hydration or they will  frizz, so first we applied the Ouidad Moisture Lock Leave-in conditioner (Available at Make Me Fabulous, $26). Then we put the Ouidad products to work.

climate controlOuidad’s Climate Control Heat and Humidity gel (Available at Make Me Fabulous, $26) is a must. This “smart” gel protects the hair and leaves it shiny and manageable with no build-up.

clear control pomade

We also love, love, love the Clear Control Pomade — it’s awesome to finish the hair and great on photo shoots to tame fly-aways, it doesn’t leave any white dust or film on set, we love that!

At Make Me Fabulous, we like to work with our clients, taking their vision into account. We refine it until they are 100% satisfied. The result: photos that make the bride look like she just stepped out of a fairy tale or just plain fabulous hair for everyday. Stop in anytime to talk about your camera ready or everyday fabulous Hair!

A Make Me Fabulous Wedding Day for Brittany and Spencer Lanning

Brittany and Spencer Lanning

Photos Courtesy Elario Photography Inc.

Brittany Jasenski and Spencer Lanning met while both in school at the University of South Carolina. At the time, he was on the football team but not even dressing for the games. As their relationship progressed, so did his career. He was a punter for the Cleveland Browns when he proposed to Brittany. She said yes, much to the delight of her mother, who played her role as mother of the bride with great anticipation. By the time Brittany and Spencer were engaged, mom had Kleinfelds in New York City picked for dress shopping and her eye fixed on both the Elario Photography and Make Me Fabulous.

“She had been planning my wedding. She constantly followed Elario Photography and Alayne was all over his pictures so it was on my mom’s radar already.”

Brittany did due diligence, interviewing several hair and makeup artists before sitting for her trial with Alayne. A pageant competitor from a young age, Brittany was admittedly picky about her look. Alayne was originally on hold for another event, when that date changed, we got the call from our planner Christine Wheat that Alayne was available. Brittany says she had all but given up on finding someone local when she hit pure gold with Alayne and #teamfab.

“A lot of (other stylists) were getting confused. It didn’t sound like I knew what I was talking about. I wanted simple but glamorous. I wanted a classic, timeless thing and when I say I like glamorous I don’t mean heavy makeup. I still wanted movie star red carpet, not too natural, not too overdone. Bridal makeup is different than going out makeup. Alayne did two looks and we ended up going with one with more warm tones. She nailed it!”

Bright and early on March 12th, Brittany and her nine-woman bridal party gathered in the Penthouse suite of the Pavilion Grand hotel in Saratoga to dress for the wedding. Alayne showed up with her bag of fabulous supplies and #teamfab. Brittany says Alayne’s efficiency and easy-going nature set the tone for her most special of days.

I was very calm throughout the whole day and I think it had a lot to do with Alayne. We had ample time. Our hair and makeup was done and we were sitting around talking and having fun. It really helped the whole mood of the day. I’ve been to weddings and it’s been really stressful and it sets the tone for the whole day. I felt very much ‘in the moment’ for the day because I had that time to get in the moment and enjoy that aspect.”

After Brittany and Spencer Lanning said “I do” on that unseasonably warm March day, wedding guests were shuttled from the Canfield Casino in Saratoga to the Hall of Springs, just a few miles up the road. Brittany had planned to change her hairstyle during the transition, because she thought she would want a different look for each venue. But, after Alayne Curtiss of Make Me Fabulous worked her magic on Brittany’s first style, the gorgeous bride changed her mind…“I loved it so much!!! So, Alayne just put a real flower in my hair and I left it like that for reception.”

Alayne and #teamfab didn’t drift far, ready for touch-ups throughout the day. She looks back on her day with the fondest of memories, cherished memories and photos a constant reminder.

Brittany and Spencer Lanning

“I definitely felt like a bride. Definitely. It was everything I could have wanted for my wedding day. Normally I’m very picky with pictures, as we’re always extra critical of ourselves. Looking at the pictures, I liked every angle— my hair, my makeup— everything.”

Best wishes and congratulations to the new bride and her husband, from Make Me Fabulous!  Check out more of Brittany and Spencer’s wedding at

Jessie Hajduk’s Beautiful Blowouts

JesseAs a little girl playing dress up, then a teenager in charge of hair and makeup for friends for special events, Jessie Hajduk has always known making people beautiful would be her life.

“It was inevitable. I’ve been doing makeup since I was two. I had friends over and did their makeup. I thought they looked beautiful… I did their hair. I did my own color. When it came to ‘What am I going to do with my life?’ It was obvious- I’ll go to beauty school. It was a no-brainer.”

Ten years after graduating from Orlo Beauty School, you’ll find Jessie at Make Me Fabulous, a round brush in one hand and a blow dryer in the other, proud of and known for her fabulous blow-outs.

“The curlier the hair, the more challenging. I ask myself, ‘How can I get this as straight as possible?”

Makeup is another of Jessie’s passions, a skill she pulls out of her bag in a big way on Halloween.

I specialize in special effects makeup, which isn’t really needed many other times of the year than Halloween… I can make you look like a zombie that’s falling to pieces, or I can make you look as beautiful as you want.”

Jessie credits her pursuit of the beauty industry and success so far to her mom, whom she says not only encouraged her but constantly provided her with loads of samples.

I had Caboodle kits upon Caboodle kits filled with makeup…. She was always very liberal with what I did with my hair and makeup… She was the one who said I should consider going to beauty school… She helped me through it, with the loans and all the stuff that goes with it. She was definitely the motivator behind it.”

Jessie officially joined Make Me Fabulous this year after freelancing and working with Alayne on the Milady brand teaching resources. She has experience with three salons and feels like she has finally found the place she should be.

I absolutely love it. The girls are such team players, and everyone helps out. Coming on as the newbie can be scary but they all made me feel welcome and accepted me as one of their own. Everyone is so sweet and so different in their own ways and everyone gets along. It’s a nice atmosphere. I love going to work every day.”

As for working with Alayne, Jessie echoes the sentiments all of the girls with #teamfab have stated.

So far I’ve learned an ungodly amount from her in the past two months. I was a Goldwell color tech so now switching to Schwarzkopf is different… Alayne is helping me relearn color and their makeup line… I’ve already learned so much. She’s a really good teacher. She makes you feel confident and comfortable with it… She’s very nurturing.”

Instagram and social media are also sources of inspiration for Jessie. She never tires of opening the aps and browsing the beautiful pictures of fellow artists.

Just to see everyone’s different styles… I follow everyone from beauty bloggers to fashion bloggers to special effects to face painters, photographers and art. It’s all over the board. It’s a wide variety of inspiration I take from everywhere.”

Jessie’s personal style tends to be funky and fun mixed with a touch of Boho. She lives in Troy with what she calls her fur babies, her cats Loki and Morrison (Yes, she admits, after Jim Morrison from The Doors.) When she’s not making others beautiful at Make Me Fabulous she practices special effects makeup on herself and hangs out with close friends and family. In the summer, she relishes hanging out on the porch reading a book.

We think Jessie is fabulous and are thrilled she’s part of #teamfab!

How to Use Your Makeup Brushes- Brushology 101

Makeup BrushThey look so pretty, offering so much promise as they greet you from your makeup bag every morning— sleek, shiny handles… glossy, fluffy bristles… a variety of shapes and sizes. But when you take your makeup brush in your hand, you’re not quite sure whether to pat, stroke or brush. Should you tap off the excess after you apply the product? How many times should you run your brush across your compact? How do you use each makeup brush? How often do you clean your brushes? And with what?

Using makeup brushes can be baffling for some. At Make Me Fabulous, we understand your questions. We’ve been there. We’ve immersed ourselves in learning. We’ve come out on the other side with a wealth of knowledge. Now we’re sharing our findings with you.

One of our best sellers is the, oh so popular, Sigma F80. With it, apply foundation to the center of your face and sweep outward to achieve a clean look. All our brushes are now synthetic, to avoid any skin reactions to animal fibers and cruelty free for all our pet loving beauties out there.

Next, use a beauty blender to blend foundation. Just dampen it with water or a favorite trick of Alayne’s is to use a bit of bareMinerals Original Primer and dab onto your foundation. To soften the coverage and any lines.

A Kabuki brush is great to use with bareMinerals foundation.  The tried and true method of  Swirl, Tap and Buff is still the best way to acheive beautiful skin and natural coverage.  At bareMinerals training they do ALOT of gentle buffing!  The warmth and motion of the brush with the minerals really creates the coveted beautiful natural finish we all fell in love with.

Use an angled brush for  contouring by swirling it around on your cheekbones and then angling it up toward your jawline.

A powder brush will blend loose powder or one of our top sellers, Mineral Veil, over the makeup you’ve already applied, setting it to provide a flawless matte finish that goes on and on.

A concealer brush will reach under your eye and into the corners, providing coverage for those dark under-eye circles and blemishes.

An all-over eyeshadow brush will provide an intense color across your entire eyelid.

A smudging brush is great for blending eyeliner after applying it. A smudged line offers that popular, smoky look.

Dab an eyebrow brush in eyebrow powder in quick strokes to provide a natural yet defined look on your brows.

A fan brush is perfect for clean-ups and airbrushed looking blush applications. Brush away the loose eyeshadow or eyeliner littering your face after applying your makeup.

We just adore the Sigma Beauty and the new and improved bareMinerals line of brushes and recommend them for all of our clients.

#teamfab will show you all of the above tips and much more during a free, in-salon client training event. It’s our third in a series of successful events. During Brushology 101, we will teach you which brushes to use to create the perfect look for you. Makeup experts Lauren and Suzan will be taking appointments all day April 29th from 10am through 5pm. They will show you how to achieve a more precise, smooth and streak-free application. They will also share how they care for their makeup brushes.
To make your appointment, call 518-885-2929 or email

Courtney Vogel’s Fabulous Lashes

courtney vogel

With steady, careful hands, the tiny lash is delicately placed. One after another, the black lashes form a line, framing first one eye, and then the second. Their owner gazes into a mirror, in love with the thick set of lashes staring back at her. She glances at the face peering over her. It’s Courtney Vogel, Aesthetician and lash specialist at Make Me Fabulous, ready with one last lash to complete the already fabulous pair.

Courtney started her career in the beauty business thirteen years ago, after graduating from the Orlo School of Hair Design. In 2012, she became certified in eyelash extensions through Lavish Lashes. A year later, she expanded her range of services even further by attending and graduating from The Aesthetic Science Institute.

Vogel particularly enjoys working with brides and travels all over the Capital Region and Beyond with #teamfab.

With all the choices people have for hair and makeup, it’s nice that people choose us on such a big day for them. It’s nice to be part of it.

With skilled hands and a creative soul, Courtney performs just about every service offered at Make Me Fabulous. Custom facials, make applications, up-dos, cuts and colors— Vogel is a full-service beauty professional. She has a passion for helping women look fabulous, and will schedule a variety of services throughout her day.

It’s fun. It doesn’t feel like work. You get to be creative and express your creativity and you make people happy and feel good.”

But ask her what her absolutely favorite task is, and she’ll tell you it’s applying eyelash extensions.

Volume Lashes by Courtney

I like the whole creation. You take someone’s features and enhance them and people feel good afterward. I haven’t had a client that hasn’t loved them (their lashes.)”

It’s important to Courtney to stay on top of her game, relying on social media to keep her perspective fresh.

“I try to keep up with current trends and see what’s happening and learn from other people. I check Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.”

Courtney came to Make Me Fabulous nearly two years ago. She says working with Alayne has been both inspirational and educational.

I like working with Alayne. She allows you to be who you are as a person in the beauty industry. She lets you do what you’re good at and run with it… I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t like her. She’s so good with people and makes them feel relaxed and at ease. She doesn’t take herself too seriously. She knows what she’s doing and just does it.”

When Courtney isn’t making clients beautiful at Make Me Fabulous, she enjoys down time with her 5-year old daughter Scarlett. She calls herself a homebody and cherishes quality time with her family.

She describes her own personal style as classic, trendy and simple.

We are thrilled to have Courtney on #teamfab and of course find her simply fabulous!

Picture Perfect Makeup, Everytime

A television anchor’s job is to deliver the day’s news with poise and confidence. You too can capture the same camera-ready makeup delivered by #TeamFab at local TV stations, weddings and even in their own silly selfies.

I regularly train the anchors and reporters from WNYT News Channel 13 in Albany and Time Warner Cable News in Albany, Syracuse, and Buffalo. Normally, I spend ninety minutes with each on-air personality, teaching them how to apply camera-ready makeup for high-definition televisions and cameras.

HD cameras can see six times sharper than the human eye, showing every pore, every blemish, every fine line, every mismatched shade. Makeup should cover imperfections while still appearing natural to avoid the appearance of makeup that is caked-on.

Today, I’m going to dive into my makeup bag, show you what’s inside so you can be ready for any photo opp, anytime!

Skin care and preparation:

  1. Wax, tweeze, and shave regularly to remove unwanted hair from eyebrows, nose and lip-area.
  2. Gently exfoliate the face and neck area to remove dead skin cells often.
  3. Steam the face to help soften fine lines and increase circulation, then follow with a moisturizer. Easily  done in the shower.

Must-have tools to keep in your bag:

  1. An eyelash/eyebrow comb, to make sure lashes are free of clumps and brows are neatly shaped.
  2. Tweezers, for last-minute hair removal.
  3. Lip exfoliator and moisturizer
  4. Blotting papers, to help absorb oil without compromising the makeup.
  5. Primers, which are silicone formulas to help to fill-in fine lines and blur imperfections. Investing in a good primer makes it easier to apply foundation and help it last longer.

One of the foundations lines we use commercially at Make Me Fabulous for high definition work  is FACE atlier, a popular brand on many television sets. According to their website, FACE atelier “was the official makeup sponsor for Kelly Clarkson and her 2012 Stronger Tour, Madonna’s Confessions Tour, and regularly supports New York Fashion Week events.”

Now, I want to share my best tips with you when working for  a high definition medium:

  1. Concealers- should be only one to two shades lighter than skin tone. I love the new Bare Skin Concealers from bareMinerals.
  2. Foundation- should use fine micronized optical correctors that sit on the skin rather than settling into lines and crevices. Mix your foundation and concealer on the back of your hand. This will warm it and allow it to melt into your skin more easily.
  3. Blush- Cream appears more natural and three-dimensional. My favorites are from Stila in shades of Lilium and Gerbera with a pop of powder blush on the apple of the cheek.
  4. HD Setting powder. Super fine texture, use sparingly.
  5. Eyeliner- Black, Charcoal, and Dark Brown work best with most shadow colors.
  6. Eye Shadow- Limit color choice to two or three shades and avoid heavy shimmer. Matte and pearl finishes work best. Try The Enlightenment and Vanilla Sugar from bareMinerals or Puppy and Cocoa from Stila.
  7. Mascara- Use mascara with a separating brush that lengthens, thickens, and separates each lash. Black or brown work best for HD. Don’t apply too much mascara on the lower lashes or you will have raccoon eyes.
  8. Lip Liner- Pick a color one shade darker than your natural lip color.
  9. Lipstick- Should bring the look together. Warm tones work best when they aren’t too matte or too shiny.
  10. Lip Gloss- Choose a lightly tinted gloss and apply to the center of the top and bottom lip. I like to avoid gloss that is heavily sparkled. I really, really like Marvelous Moxie shades in Party Starter and High Roller from bareMinerals to brighten the entire face.

Marvelous Moxie, High Roller at Make Me Fabulous, 32 Front St., Ballston Spa, NY.

One more tip for when you know you are going in front of the camera lens:  watch pinks which most often will turn orange or appear brighter on camera. We recommend warm shades of reds or corals rather than cool shades of reds or pinks.

There you have it! Try a few of my tips and tell me what you think next time you are in the shop!
