Part 2 – Help Alayne! My Hair is Falling out.

Well here it is! Part 2 of my tips to prevent hair loss!

We had so many comments about part 1 of this series about why your hair might be falling out, and here it is, Part 2 … With the good news!  There are many options to minimize hair loss and regrow healthy hair.  So, lets get started.

Hair-loss prevention depends on the underlying cause. Of course, treatment of underlying medical conditions like thyroid disease, anemia, and hormonal imbalances may be useful in preventing continued hair loss. So talk to your doctor if think you may have a medical condition but also try these tips to minimize hair loss:

Start with good nutrition. Especially adequate levels of iron and vitamin B, not just Biotin but the full range of vitamin B. Also take  Vitamin D and Iron, (look for a chelated or non constipating one.) Find HUM vitamins at Make Me Fabulous very soon!  Which have unique blends of vitamins, minerals and organic herbs to target your specific beauty needs from the inside.  Also, eat those fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamin A, B, Iron and protein. Examples: carrot, spinach, lentil, milk, cheese, dark green vegetables, fortified cereals, etc.  If you have sensitivity to gluten or dairy eliminate those ingredients from your hair products as well.  The Schwarzkopf and Colorproof lines we carry are both gluten free.  Eliminate whey in any hair and skin products if you have an issue with dairy products.  Volumizing or plumping products generally contain whey.

Ease up on the Heat. Many hair experts suggest putting away the blow dryer and air drying your hair instead. If you can’t live without your blow dryer, use it on a low-heat setting. Styling your hair while it’s wet can cause it to stretch and break. So style your hair when it’s dry or damp. Avoid teasing or back-combing your hair because they can cause damage. Ask your #teamfab stylist to show you some quick and easy non-heat styling options to do while sleeping or on the fly in the am.

Yoga for hair loss control and management. Yoga is the best therapy to combat stress, anxiety, depression and tension. These negative domains of health play important roles to suppress the body and also contribute to hair problems. Yoga such as Shirsasana (Headstand pose), Sarvangasana (Shoulder stand pose) and Viprit Karni increases blood supply to the scalp region and prevents thinning of hair. Meditation, Pranayama and relaxation yogic techniques greatly help to ease stress.ASANA_C

Scalp massage. Use simple scalp massage techniques and formulations to prevent hair loss. Massage scalp with oil such as coconut oil or vitamin E oil.  Even massaging with lemon juice has been known to be effective if you have build up on the scalp. Unfortunately, this may lighten hair or make it brassy. Do gentle massage to your scalp daily for 4 minutes as it helps to improve blood circulation and thereby hair growth. You may also consider using BC Plumping Tonic described in more detail below or Bumble and Bumble Thickening Serum. My own daughter who takes medication that thins her hair for an autoimmune condition tried this one in a manner known as “the inversion method,” where you massage your scalp daily with one of the treatment products listed above with your head upside for 4 minutes daily for 7 days in a row each month. I think her hair never looked better!

Scalp Exfoliation. My search also brought me to the benefits of exfoliating the scalp.  A gentle exfoliator removes build-up and residue to refresh, restore and revitalize the scalp.  Tea tree oil is said to be a good oil to use for scalp exfoliation or, we found a completely natural plant based product now available at MMF.  Try Neu scalp therapy from Neuma– featuring a proprietary blend of plant extracts and essential oils.  Can be used weekly, or as needed, to help maintain and promote healthy scalp and hair. Safe for color treated hair also extends the life and vibrancy of hair color. Rinse hair. Lather with reNeu shampoo™. Apply reNeu scalp therapy™ directly to scalp and massage with fingertips. Leave on 2 minutes. Contains ZERO synthetic fragrance, sulfates, sodium chloride, parabens, 1,4-dioxane, phthalates, glutens, neurotoxins, aluminum compounds, glycols, formaldehyde donors, ureas, carcinogens, environmental pollutants – simply a genuine, sustainable brand. • Renewable, beneficial, plant-based, colour safe ingredients • Certified Organic Extracts • 90% post consumer recycled bottles • 100% certified wind power • 100% recycled fiber containers • Vegan • PETA approved • No animal testingneuma

Bumble and Bumble Full Potential is an additional exfoliating therapy and more.  A professional, hair-preserving shampoo, conditioner and spray for fuller, stronger hair. When used as a regimen, it helps reduce hair loss* by 46% in one month. Infused with Hair Preserve Blend™, this invigorating, exfoliating treatment creates an optimal scalp environment by removing sebum and product build-up. The Hair Preserve Blend™ acts like a “liquid bandage” to promote strength and elasticity for thicker-feeling hair.full potential

Use Detox Shampoo once a week: Once a week use Colorproof’s Detox Shampoo to fully clean the scalp and eliminate any clogging products or residue.  This technique is amazing and your hair becomes softer with every detox shampoo we have seen clients need to be shampooed initially anywhere from 3 to 7 times to fully breakdown buildup.

How to Create the Perfect Holiday Updo

’Tis the season for festive, holiday hair. Whether you’re on the fundraising and charity event circuit or plan to attend family and office parties, there’s nothing that says, “celebrate” like an updo. It can be as simple as a pony tail or as elaborate as you choose. It has the power to convey your style as chic,’ trendy, cool, classic or a combination of all of the above.

Think about a few of the award shows you’ve seen on television recently. Most celebrities wouldn’t think of hitting the red carpet without pulling back their hair. In photos, it opens the face and eliminates the

distraction of hair hanging down in front.

Our stylists at Make Me Fabulous are talking about Kendall Jenner’s hair in this photo. It is arranged to purposely appear a bit “messy.” A few strands are pulled-out around Kendall’s face, framing her beautiful features and exuding sexy and chic’.

At the shop or on location, updos are our “thing.” Wkeeddings, proms, parties and photo shoots inspire us and fill us with the desire to share our creative flair with you. Our stylists just adore  designing your masterpieces.

Because the holidays fill us with generosity, #teamfab has collaborated with our friends at Bumble and bumble and pulled together a few tips we’d like to share with you on creating your own holiday hair style at home.

  1. Spritz Bumble and bumble’s Surf Spray evenly into dry hair for grip and texture.
  2. Massage Bumble and bumble’s Prêt-a’-powder from roots to ends for added volume.
  3. Part hair in the center, and create texture on either side of the head with fingers or a by wrapping strands around a large curling iron.
  4. For a slightly undone feel, around the hairline.  run your fingers through the hair and pull out a few pieces around the face and smooth with a flat iron.
  5. Pin the ends of the hair in a messy bun above the nape.
  6. Dress in your finest and hit your next holiday party with the confidence of the stars!
  7. Finish with any one of our favorite hair sprays to keep your “do” going as long as you do. Try Does It All which gives soft hold and shine.

Ask Alayne: The Perfect Part

“Alayne, I have been analyzing my photos recently and am wondering if I need to change-up where I part my hair. It’s on the left side right now but I’m wondering if I should go closer to the middle. How do I determine the perfect part?” — Jackie, Clifton Park

Alayne says: Jackie, the beauty of it is, there really is no “perfect” part. Thanks to a wealth of styling products available, we have so many styling options. When a client sits in my chair at Make Me Fabulous, we talk about what is happening with her hair. It’s actually normal to find breakage on the side where you typically part your hair.

Ask Alayne Curtiss: The Perfect Part at Make Me FabulousThink about it— we consistently work with one side to “go” that certain way. We apply heat, we blow-dry, we flat iron, we curl, we brush. When I see this breakage, I’ll often recommend switching the part.Just because you chose to part your hair a certain way five or ten or forty years ago does not mean you are stuck with that part for your entire life. I switch my part every six months. Moving it around gives you more fullness and gives the weakened side an opportunity to grow out because you’re not applying as much heat and working with it constantly.

When I consult with a Make Me Fabulous bride, we play with the part line. It’s long been said, the best looking place to put it is at the high point of the brow. So I take out my long-handled comb and we start there. Then we check it out in the mirror, we snap a few photos. We may extend the part. We may switch sides. We may move it to the middle. It’s really all about the client’s comfort level.

Though there is no “wrong” way to part it, here are a few other details to keep in mind when choosing your part:

— A deeper part will offer a dressier, more formal look.
— A less drastic or middle part will provide a more casual look.
— Part in the opposite direction of a widow’s peak to add height.
— Part in the direction of a widow’s peak to add a softer, flatter look.

Keep in mind, when you first move the part or cut your bangs, you and your hair will have an adjustment period of about two weeks. It may be a bit more of a struggle to convince it to lay right at first, but the proper products will make the transition easier.

At Make Me Fabulous, we use Bumble and bumble’s styling lotion (available at the shop for $29) for new parts, styles or cowlicks. It gives the hair more weight and holds it in place until it remembers where exactly you are redirecting it.

As we’re still working through the style, we’ll use a softer spray like Bumble and bumble does it all ( also available at the shop for $29) or Schwarzkopf’s OSIS+ Elastic.
(only $19.)B02K_95x150

To finish and really hold that look in place, we’ll use Schwarzkopf’s OSIS+ Freeze (Available at MMF for $19).

It’s exhilarating to think about all of the options you have. It’s up to you and #teamfab to make sure you pick one that makes you look… simply fabulous!

Weather-Proofing Hair & Makeup

There’s nothing at Make Me Fabulous we love more than a wedding. We assemble #TeamFab, pull out our makeup brushes, curling irons, bobby pins and shower our brides and their bridal parties with our undivided creative attention.

Some days, mother nature blesses us with a picture perfect day: low humidity, a light (if any) breeze, and attentive and warming sunshine. Other days, we work extra hard to ensure, in thirty years, when our brides are showing their photo albums to their grandchildren, it  appears to have been a picture perfect day.

The latter was the case on a rainy day in September, when #TeamFab buzzed around the gorgeous Jessica Salamone in preparation for her wedding at The Sagamore. The sun decided to take a sick day, sending the rain as a most unwanted guest. On top of that, part of Jessica’s agenda included a 90-mile-an-hour boat ride on Lake George.

We knew we’d need to call in some extra help: just the right products for both hair and makeup.

We dug deep into our bag of Bumble and bumble hair products, one of our favorite lines for protection and coverage in a variety of weather conditions.

To withstand the wind, humidity and rain invading us this particular day, we chose Bumble and bumble’s quenching Complex,  a daily, leave-in treatment that smooths the cuticle, seals in moisture, renews shine, and protects from fly-aways.  This product is amazing. Because hair frizzes when it is thirsty and looking for moisture, we fill the ends with this quenching Complex when the hair is almost dry, and then layer our styling products on top.

Jessica’s coarse, heavy hair also called for Bumble and bumble’s Straight blow dry. This cream contains five humectants and works wonders on hair that is thick, frizzy, coarse, or curly. We worked it through her damp hair and blow-dried section by section, resulting in the amazing smoothness you see in her photo!

Bumble and bumble have a few different looks we like created with Straight blow dry, check out the video clips here:

During blow drying and then again, after the style was finished, we misted Jessica’s hair with Bumble and bumble’s holding Spray, GREAT for taming strays and holding the shape while maintaining workability.

To completely finish Jessica’s hair, we sprayed it with HumidityRx Anti-Frizz Weatherproof Spray by ColorProof. This stuff is pure magic, providing a fine mist that repels moisture and locks out humidity, fights frizz and literally weatherproofs the hair. It’s not a hairspray, so it doesn’t make the hair stiff or sticky.

Faces on this gorgeous bride and her bridesmaids started with professional airbrush makeup by FACE atelier and then set with their matte finishing spray. These products provide a flawless complexion that lasts all day, even in not-so-fabulous weather.

On Jessica’s lips you’ll see Stila’s Lip Crush in Yumberry, a lip and cheek stain infused with natural ingredients.  The look is subtle, sheer and healthy with long-lasting color. The Stila formula actually reacts with the PH in the skin to create the perfect pop of color, unique to each woman who wears it. Because it flows from a pen, it’s super-easy to use!

Then, to create a fabulous “Barbie pink” pop of color on the bride’s lips, we topped them off with bare Minerals’ uber popular Marvelous Moxie Lipgloss in super pink. This award-winner offers sheer to medium coverage and SUPER shine.

Rain? What rain? #TeamFab at Make Me Fabulous outfitted this gorgeous bride and her bridal party with an invisible shield that worked behind the scenes all day, silently battling wind and rain, creating memories that were… simply fabulous.

Ask Alayne! Cleaning Makeup Brushes and More!

We’re starting a new feature here on the Make Me Fabulous blog! Every so often we’re going to post a few common beauty questions that we get from our clients and Alayne will share the answers with all of you! How fun and fabulous! Ready? Here we go…

Question 1) How often should I be cleaning my makeup brushes and what should I clean them with and how?

Alayne’s Answer: Great question! Given the frequent use of brushes here at the shop and when we’re out “in the field,” I feel like all we do is clean makeup brushes! But for regular, at home use, I recommend that you clean your brushes once a month.

Here at Make Me Fabulous we clean our brushes with a gentle soap like the Bare Minerals Brush Shampoo, Well-Cared For. You can also use a mild shampoo like Bumble and bumble’s Gentle Shampoo (both available at Make Me Fabulous). I like to put a small dab of soap in the palm of my hand swish each brush; then I have a little dish with some more soap and tepid water that I swish the brushes in to make sure all of the makeup is out of the bristles. Don’t immerse your brush to the base of the bristles (also known as the “ferrule”) as that may cause the bristles to loosen and always keep your brush pointed down while you’re cleaning it. Then rinse the brush in clean water, squeeze out the excess water, and leave them out to dry on the edge of a sink, or someplace where the air can get to all the bristles and the brush can dry completely.

Question 2) I’ve noticed that some face creams I’ve purchased come with a thin plastic lid under the cap or cover–should I keep that inside lid or can I throw it away?

Alayne’s Answer: Oooh, another goodie! Believe it or not, that inside lid is there for a good reason. Some creams and moisturizers (like philosophy’s miracle worker–available at MMF) contain active ingredients like retinol or Vitamin C and that inside lid / liner is there to block out any light or air. The absence of the inside lid may cause those active ingredients to break down and render the product less effective. Bottom line: don’t throw those inside lids away!

Taking Time to Make Time

With summer in full-swing, a busy salon / wedding calendar, a daughter graduating high school and about to enter college, a new house, and countless other activities, to say I’m a busy lady is, well, a HUGE understatement. But I know, despite how busy I am at work or at home, that I have to take time for myself every now and then. And you should, too. That’s why we try our absolute best to make your experience at Make Me Fabulous a supremely enjoyable one from the moment you walk in the door. If you’re not satisfied, I’m not satisfied.

Part of doing my best for my clients and family includes taking some time for me to relax and unwind…I try to put myself in the shoes of my clients. If I were a client of Make Me Fabulous and not the owner, what services would I like to have done?

photo-941

For me, one of the most relaxing and rewarding services is a wash and blowout. Even though I’m a professional and can shampoo hair with the best of them, there’s something about having your hair washed by someone else…it’s so relaxing. I close my eyes and focus on the scalp massage and the fresh, clean scent of the shampoo (I really love the scent of the new Surf shampoo and conditioner from Bumble and bumble and clients are going wild over our newest additions of Morrocconoil Oil and Dry and Oily Scalp treatments with a relaxing scalp massage, AHHHHH!). Then I enjoy a trim and a great blowout and I feel like a new woman. For the month of July, get a Morroconoil scalp treatment with any service and receive a free trial size of Morroconoil to take home and try on yourself!

It’s the little things, right? Sometimes that’s all it takes…other nights a glass or two of wine thrown in helps a bit, too!

What helps you relax? Do you feel calm and more focused after you take some time for yourself? Let me know in the comments!
