Let’s Talk “Cones”

Silicones cover the hair with a coating that conditions the hair, makes it slippery so it can be easily de-tangled and helps seal the cuticle keeping frizz away.

There are 2 types of silicones, water soluble and non-water soluble.  Water soluble silicones dissolve in water and will wash out of hair easily.  Non-water soluble silicones do not dissolve in water and will need a clarifying shampoo like Colorproof Clear It Up Detox Shampoo to remove them and prevent build up, yet it maintains your hair color (amazing stuff, I know!)

Examples of water-soluble silicones are cyclomethicone, dimethicone copolyol and hydrolyzed wheat protein (hydroxypropyl polysiloxane).  Non-water-soluble silicones include phenyl trimethicone, dimethicone and cyclomethicone.

At MMF, most of our products are silicone free.  However, you will find silicones in some of our shine and smoothing products because they help fight frizz!  Neuma Finishing Polish has phenyl trimethicone in it. Ouidad Texture Smoothing Spray has dimethicone.  Colorproof Crazy Smooth Extreme Shine Treatment Oil also contains dimethicone.  Moroccanoil Signature oil has the 3 “cyclo” cones which evaporate. They are used as a carrier for dimethicone which is what is really smoothing and conditioning your hair. The cyclo’s distribute easily through your hair, depositing a thin coating of dimethicone. Then *poof* they disappear.  Moroccanoil Smoothing Lotion has cyclomethicone.

The Schwarzkopf Excellium line for fine, mature hair is completely “cone” free.  Try the Mousse and Plumping Spray. They are truly fantastic

We at MMF recommend using any product containing non water soluble “cones” on the mid-shaft to ends only.  This way you won’t have any problems with clogging the hair follicle and also using a detox shampoo once a week. Pretty simple!
